Living in Warborough
The green is the heart of Warborough, with a playground, the cricket pitch and football goals. The Six Bells overlooks the cricket green, the Greet Memorial Hall and the smaller St Laurence Hall host classes and events through the year, and with a shop and post office in the village most day-to-day errands can be done without getting in the car. St Laurence Church of England School and the village pre-school serve younger children, and most secondary pupils from the parish attend Wallingford School.
The village has a long recorded history. In 1086 it formed part of the large royal estate of Benson, and St Laurence's church has a late 12th-century font and an early 13th-century chancel. A cruck cottage near the church and a manor house with a date stone of 1696 survive among the older buildings, and homes range from period cottages around the green to later family homes. Joseph Tubb, a maltster who lived in the village, carved the Poem Tree on nearby Wittenham Clumps in 1844 and 1845, and Warborough has been used as a filming location for Midsomer Murders.
The River Thames at Shillingford is a short walk away, and the A329 runs through the village to meet the A4074 Oxford to Reading road there, where a Grade II* listed bridge of 1827 crosses the river. Cholsey and Didcot Parkway are the nearest stations, both with services to London Paddington, and Wallingford is close by for a wider range of shops.
