Living in North Moreton

North Moreton is the kind of village where the pub and the church do much of the work of bringing people together. The Bear of North Moreton, which reopened under new tenants in December 2022, is the natural meeting point. South Moreton is close enough to walk to, and there the Crown Inn was saved by a community benefit society and reopened as a community pub in 2019. Families use South Moreton School, a primary with an attached pre-school, and secondary schools in Didcot and Wallingford.

The village has deep roots. All Saints Church, now part of the Churn benefice, was built in the 13th century, with a chantry chapel added in the 14th for the Stapleton family, and its east window holds rare 14th-century stained glass; the church is Grade I listed. The pub dates from the 16th century and keeps its timber framing, inglenook fireplace and well, and in 1604 the village was at the centre of the Anne Gunter case, a claimed bewitchment later exposed in the Star Chamber. Thatched cottages line Church Street, and other homes range from period cottages to later family houses, all surrounded by open farmland.

Didcot Parkway is roughly three miles away, with frequent direct Great Western Railway trains to London Paddington, and Cholsey station is a similar distance, with around two trains an hour to Paddington off-peak. Thames Travel route 94 links the village with Didcot and Didcot Parkway on weekdays during school terms, the A4130 connects Didcot and Wallingford, and the A34 and Milton Park are reached easily via Didcot. For supermarkets and leisure facilities, residents look to Didcot to the west and Wallingford to the east.
