Living in Bampton

Bampton has the facilities of a small town in a village setting. A Co-op, post office, doctors' surgery, pharmacy, small library and several pubs cover daily needs, with Carterton and Witney close for larger supermarkets, and Bampton CofE Primary School is in the village. The recreation ground has public tennis courts, there are football and cricket clubs, and the Town Hall, completed in 1838, now houses Bampton Arts Centre with an art gallery on the first floor.

Bampton was already a market town by the time of Domesday Book in 1086, and its market continued until the 1890s. Grade I listed St Mary's Church began as a Saxon minster, and many visitors know the village from Downton Abbey, which filmed at the Old Rectory (Churchgate House), the library and the church. Morris dancing has been handed down for generations and is celebrated at the Day of Dance every late May bank holiday, alongside Bampton Classical Opera and the Community Archive in the old grammar school. Homes range from period houses in the historic centre and larger listed houses such as The Deanery and Weald Manor to more recent properties.

There is no station in Bampton, as the Brize Norton and Bampton station closed in 1962. Hanborough station on the Cotswold Line is the nearest, with Great Western Railway trains to London Paddington. The A4095 passes through the village, bus route 19 runs hourly between Carterton, Bampton, Standlake and Witney from Monday to Saturday, and most residents look to Witney, Carterton and Oxford for work. Walkers can head south towards the Thames or follow Shill Brook.
