Living in Banbury
With more than 54,000 residents at the 2021 Census, Banbury has the services of a proper town. Day-to-day life centres on a busy town centre: the Victorian Corn Exchange on Cornhill, now an entrance to the shopping centre, the Town Hall on Bridge Street, and Castle Quay, which has also housed Cherwell District Council's offices since March 2025. Spiceball Park has a sports centre and swimming pool across the road, and People's Park, opened in 1910, has tennis courts, a bird house and a children's play area. Schools include North Oxfordshire Academy, Wykham Park Academy, Space Studio Banbury and Blessed George Napier Catholic School.
The town's medieval prosperity was built on wool. Its castle, begun in 1135, was besieged during the Civil War and demolished afterwards, and the Banbury Cross you see today went up in 1859. The Oxford Canal reached Banbury in 1778, and Tooley's Boatyard, built the same year and now a scheduled monument, still sits on the waterfront. Banbury is also a motorsport town: Prodrive is based here, and the Haas F1 Team uses Banbury as its European base. Housing ranges from older homes in and around the town centre to the Ruscote estate, which expanded from the 1950s, and newer developments such as Hanwell Farm, built in 2005 and 2006.
Banbury station is on the Chiltern Railways line between London Marylebone and Birmingham, and the quickest trains reach Marylebone in under an hour. Chiltern and Great Western Railway both run to Oxford, with GWR continuing to Didcot Parkway from Monday to Saturday, while CrossCountry connects the town with Reading, Birmingham and the south coast. Stagecoach buses link Banbury with Oxford, Chipping Norton, Leamington Spa and Stratford-upon-Avon, and the A422 Hennef Way gives a fast route onto the M40.
