Living in Childrey

Childrey has a busy calendar for a village of its size. There is a village shop, a preschool, a village hall dating from 1896 and a Methodist church, and The Hatchet, a family run local with a large garden, reopened in 2021. Childrey Football Club plays in the North Berks League, the Challow and Childrey Cricket Club is based nearby in East Challow, and annual events include a music festival and bonfire night. The Ridgeway CE Primary School on West Street is rated Good by Ofsted, King Alfred's Academy in Wantage takes ages 11 to 18, and Wantage handles day to day shopping.

The name comes from the Old English for 'Cilla's stream'. Two Bronze Age bowl barrows lie south of the village, the Grade I listed Church of St Mary holds a notable collection of brasses, including the largest in old Berkshire, and William Fettiplace founded an almshouse and school here in about 1526. The cedar of Lebanon planted at the rectory in 1646 is the oldest surviving example in Britain, and the village pond, used for centuries to water livestock, is a well known local spot. Homes include historic village houses, cottages, detached family homes and bungalows, many with good gardens and long views.

The Ridgeway runs along the chalk ridge about two miles to the south, opening up long walks across the Downs. The B4001 runs through the village and meets the A417 about two miles north, and from Wantage the A338 heads south to the M4 at Junction 14. Challow station, just outside the parish, closed in 1964, so Didcot Parkway is now the main station, with trains to London Paddington, Reading, Oxford and Bristol.
