Living in East Hendred

The Wheatsheaf and the Eyston Arms are the village pubs, and Snells Hall, a converted Church of England primary school, is the village hall and the base for clubs and the pre-school. The Hendreds Church of England School on Ford Lane takes children from 4 to 11, and King Alfred's Academy in Wantage is a nearby secondary option for ages 11 to 18. The Ridgeway National Trail runs along the downs at the southern end of the parish, giving long walks with open views over the Vale, and Scutchamer Knob, the remains of an Iron Age long barrow just over 2 miles south of the village, makes a good destination.

Few villages have such a long link with one family. Hendred House has been held by the Eyston family for more than 600 years, and its medieval chapel of St Amand is still used for occasional services. The Church of St Augustine of Canterbury dates from the late 12th century, with a clock made by John Seymour of Wantage in 1525 and a ring of six bells, while the Champs Chapel Museum occupies a 15th-century wayside chapel and gives a good introduction to the village's past. Homes range from historic cottages and farmhouses to later village houses.

Didcot Parkway, about 4 miles east, has services to London Paddington, Oxford and Reading, and Harwell Campus is a short drive away. Wantage and Didcot are both within easy reach by road, and the Ridgeway and the Icknield Way both cross the parish.
