Living in Steventon
With a population of around 1,500, Steventon is large enough to support a bakery, a Co-operative store, a village hall and a sports and social club, which runs teams and events through the year. There are three pubs: the Cherry Tree, the Fox and the North Star, a Grade II listed 17th-century building on the Causeway and one of the few traditional pubs in the country with no bar counter, as beer is served through a stable door from the cellar. The village green has a cricket pitch, each July the Truck Festival takes place at Hill Farm on the edge of the village, and St Michael's CofE Primary School takes children from age 2 to 11.
The village's best-known feature is the Causeway, a medieval cobbled path and former road nearly a mile long running east to west through the village, and a pleasant walk in its own right. St Michael and All Angels church is Grade I listed, and many of the houses along the Causeway are medieval timber-framed buildings, with Priory Cottages listed Grade II*. Alongside these you will find later houses and newer developments, giving a broad mix of property. The route of the abandoned Wilts and Berks Canal runs through the west of the parish, where the Wilts and Berks Canal Trust is working on its restoration.
Steventon once had its own station on the Great Western Railway, which closed in 1964. Didcot Parkway is now the nearest station, with services to London Paddington, Oxford and Reading. Since the 1970s the A34 dual carriageway has bypassed the village, and the former main road north towards Abingdon, 4 miles away for wider shopping, is now the B4017.
