Living in Drayton

Drayton has the everyday basics of a working village: a community primary school, the Red Lion, an Indian restaurant on The Green in the former Wheatsheaf pub and Drayton Baptist Church. Abingdon's supermarkets, riverside and town centre are about two miles up the B4017, and many residents look there for secondary schooling, with Fitzharrys School, Larkmead School and John Mason School, and Abingdon School and the School of St Helen and St Katharine among the independent choices. Walkers can follow the route of the old Wilts and Berks Canal across the parish to Drayton Lock, the last lock on its descent to Abingdon, which a trust is now working to restore.

Drayton has deep roots. In 955 King Eadred granted land here to a thegn named Eadwold, who later left the estate to Abingdon Abbey. St Peter's Church has Norman fabric from around 1200 and a 15th-century west tower with a ring of eight bells, and both the church and the Manor House, which has 15th-century origins, are Grade II* listed. The Baptist church was built as a chapel in 1834, the Neolithic Drayton Cursus featured on Time Team in 2010, and the village, part of Berkshire until 1974, has been twinned with Lesparre-Médoc in France since 2000. Housing ranges from listed buildings in the historic core to homes added as the village grew.

Drayton sits on the old main road between Oxford, Abingdon and Newbury, now the B4017, and the A34 dual carriageway, which has bypassed the village since the 1970s, gives quick access to Oxford and the M4. Steventon station closed in 1964, so Didcot Parkway is the nearest main line station, with direct trains to London Paddington, Oxford and Bristol. Milton Park, one of the area's largest employment sites, and Harwell are a short drive south.
