Living in Milton
Milton combines a small village core with one of the area's biggest employers on its doorstep, so many residents can walk or cycle to work at Milton Park. Milton United Football Club plays at Potash Lane, and Didcot's shops and leisure facilities are a few minutes' drive east, with Abingdon a similar distance north. St Blaise CofE Primary School is on School Lane at nearby Milton Heights, and secondary schools in Didcot include St Birinus School, Didcot Girls' School and Aureus School, with UTC Oxfordshire for ages 14 to 19.
In 956 King Eadwig granted land at Milton to his thegn Alfwin, who later gave the estate to Abingdon Abbey, and an Anglo-Saxon cemetery with more than 40 burials was excavated near Sutton Road in 2014. Milton Manor House, a Grade I listed 17th-century house built for the Calton family, opens to the public on certain dates between Easter and the end of August. St Blaise Church, largely rebuilt between 1849 and 1851 by Henry Woodyer, is Grade II* listed, and Milton Hill House, built around 1770 about 1.5 miles south of the village, is now a hotel. Milton Park occupies the site of a large Second World War army depot, and homes in the village range from older properties to more recent housing.
For commuters, few villages are better connected. Milton sits beside the Milton Interchange, built in the 1970s where the A34 meets the A4130, giving fast access north to Oxford and south to the M4. Didcot Parkway has direct trains to London Paddington, Oxford and Bristol, Milton Park has fast bus links to central Oxford and the Headington hospitals, and the science campus at Harwell is close by.
