Didcot reviews

Living in Sutton Courtenay

The village feels rooted in its history but is very much a working community, with 3,055 residents at the 2021 census, up from 2,421 in 2011. Sutton Courtenay Church of England Primary School, All Saints' Church and two pubs, The George on Church Street and the Swan Foodhouse and Bar on The Green, give it a clear centre, and the Thames runs along its edge. The causeway and weirs that separate the millstream from Sutton Pools are a popular spot for riverside walks. For shopping and secondary schools, families look to Abingdon and Didcot.

Few villages in the area have a longer written history. Records begin in 688, Alfred the Great is believed to have married here in 868, and the Courtenay family, who gave the village its name, took up residence at the manor in the 1170s. The Norman Hall dates from about 1192, The Abbey is Grade I listed, and All Saints' churchyard is the resting place of George Orwell and the former Prime Minister H. H. Asquith. Older village houses sit alongside more recent homes, reflecting the growth of the last decade.

Employment is close by. Milton Park, home to more than 280 organisations in fields such as life sciences, energy and space, sits between Didcot and Abingdon, and the Didcot power station sites lie within the parish. Many residents commute from Didcot Parkway, with London about 45 minutes away by train, while Appleford station on the Cherwell Valley Line has Great Western Railway trains to Oxford and Didcot Parkway from Monday to Saturday. The A34 gives quick access to Oxford, Newbury and the M4.
