Life in Sunningwell is quiet and close to the countryside, but rarely isolated. The Flowing Well is the village pub, and Sunningwell Church of England Primary School on Dark Lane serves younger children. The original 19th-century schoolroom opposite the church is now home to the Sunningwell School of Art. Footpaths lead out towards the higher ground of Boars Hill, and for everyday shopping residents use neighbouring Wootton and Abingdon, while Oxford provides the wider choice of shops, hospitals and secondary schools.
The name comes from Old English and means the spring of Sunna's people, and the village appears in the Domesday Book as Soningeuell. St Leonard's Church, at the heart of the old village, is recorded from 1246, is Grade II* listed and has a ring of six bells in its tower. Its unusual polygonal west porch, with Ionic columns, is said to have been given by John Jewel, Bishop of Salisbury, who was rector here around 1551, and the painter J. M. W. Turner stayed in the village at the age of 14 and sketched the area. Property ranges from period village houses and cottages to larger detached homes.
There is no station in Sunningwell. Oxford station, a short drive north, has direct Great Western Railway trains to London Paddington, and Radley station, which serves Abingdon, has local trains to Oxford and Didcot Parkway. The A34 runs just to the east of the parish, giving fast road access north to Oxford and the M40 and south towards Milton Park, Didcot and the M4.
