Living in Grove
Day-to-day life in Grove is convenient. The Baytree on Denchworth Road, the Bell on Main Street and the Volunteer on Station Road are the village pubs, and primary schools include Millbrook Primary School, Grove Church of England School and St John's CE Academy, which opened its first classes in 2023 on the Wellington Gate development and is planned as an all-through school for ages 2 to 16. King Alfred's Academy in Wantage is the nearby secondary for ages 11 to 18. Letcombe Brook and restored stretches of the old canal give green routes through the village, and the downs south of Wantage are a short drive away.
Extensive housing development means Grove now almost meets Wantage. Its history includes RAF Grove, a wartime airfield later used by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, and the Wilts and Berks Canal, several small sections of which have been restored. Grove Farmhouse is dated 1684, but most of the housing stock is more recent, from post-war estates to the large Wellington Gate development on the former airfield. The Williams Formula One team has been based here since 1996, and its Experience Centre offers tours, a museum and hands-on activities.
The A338 runs along the east side of the village, north towards Oxford and south through Wantage to junction 14 of the M4. Wantage Road station closed in 1965, so Didcot Parkway, around 8 miles east, is the nearest station, with fast trains to London Paddington. Frequent buses run to Oxford, Abingdon, Didcot, Milton Park, Harwell Campus and Wantage, and Oxfordshire County Council has a policy of seeking a new station for Wantage and Grove, though none has been confirmed.
