Living in Great Western Park

Day-to-day life on Great Western Park centres on its schools and open spaces. Aureus Primary School, Didcot Primary Academy, Aureus School for ages 11 to 16 and UTC Oxfordshire for ages 14 to 19 all serve the estate, so many families can do the school run on foot. Boundary Park, the large green space near the middle of the estate, has tennis and netball courts and is the home ground of Didcot Cricket Club, and the district community centre provides a hall for classes and local groups, with Abingdon and Witney College running courses there. Didcot town centre, with its shops and leisure facilities, is a few minutes away by car or bike.

Taylor Wimpey started work on the site in 2010, and around 1,000 of the homes were planned as social or affordable housing. Because the whole neighbourhood was laid out in one scheme, the housing is almost entirely modern, in a range of sizes from starter homes to larger family houses. The estate sits across the boundary between South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse: the northern and southern parts belong to Didcot parish, while the western part has formed the new parish of Western Valley since 2023. If you are buying here, ask your solicitor whether your road has been adopted by the council and whether any estate charges apply, as unadopted roads on the estate have been a topic of local debate.

Many residents commute by train from Didcot Parkway, on the Great Western Main Line, which has frequent direct Great Western Railway trains to London Paddington, Reading and Oxford. Others travel by road to Milton Park and the Harwell Campus. The A34 runs along the western side of the estate, and the A4130 links Didcot with the A34 for Oxford, Newbury and the M4.
