Living in Clifton Hampden
Clifton Hampden and Burcot have around 660 residents between them, yet the village supports a shop with a sub-post office, a GP practice, a primary school, a church and a village hall, built in 1896 and still the focus for meetings and events. Clifton Hampden Church of England Primary School occupies a building put up in 1847. There is also a Women's Institute shared with Burcot, a longbow archery society and Clifton Hampden Cricket Club, which plays in the Oxfordshire Cherwell League.
Much of the village's look comes from the Victorian architect George Gilbert Scott, who rebuilt the church of St Michael and All Angels on its bluff above the river in the 1840s, designed the manor house and in 1867 replaced the old ferry with the red brick Clifton Hampden Bridge. Just across the bridge, the Barley Mow, a timber-framed inn dating from 1352, is the pub Jerome K. Jerome wrote about in Three Men in a Boat. Several cottages survive from the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, and property ranges from thatched and period cottages to substantial detached houses on the edges of the village.
Clifton Lock and the Clifton Cut are a short walk upstream, and Culham Science Centre, home to major nuclear fusion research, occupies the former airfield next to the village. Culham station sits just off the A415 between Clifton Hampden and Culham, with Great Western Railway trains between Didcot Parkway and Oxford, and Didcot Parkway has direct trains to London Paddington. The A415 runs west to Abingdon, and Abingdon, Didcot and Oxford are all a short drive away for shops, schools and leisure.
