Living in Kingsclere

Kingsclere is a charming large village in Hampshire with around 3,300 residents. Located between Newbury and Basingstoke on the A339, it offers an appealing blend of village charm and countryside access with good transport links to larger towns and cities. The village centre has a solid selection of local shops and businesses, essential healthcare services including GP surgeries and a pharmacy, plus a well-regarded primary school. At the heart of the village stands the distinctive Church of England parish church of St. Mary's with its 12th-century Norman origins and characteristic tower.

Kingsclere benefits from excellent transport connections via the A339, providing easy access to both Newbury and Basingstoke, each just 8 miles away. Both towns offer comprehensive facilities and railway stations with direct routes to London, while the A339 also connects to the M4 motorway via Newbury and the M3 via Basingstoke. The village is steeped in equestrian history and is synonymous with the Sport of Kings, Park House Stables has produced legendary racehorses including Mill Reef, and is now run by TV presenter Clare Balding and her brother Andrew, who trained the Queen's horse Tactical.

The village offers a mix of period properties and more modern homes, with prices generally more affordable than in nearby Newbury or Basingstoke. Kingsclere has a strong community spirit with many local organisations and volunteer groups, varied outdoor facilities, and an extensive network of footpaths and bridleways. The area is close to Watership Down, famous from Richard Adams' novel, adding to its countryside appeal. The name 'Kingsclere' derives from King Alfred and the word 'clere', meaning bright or clearing, reflecting its historic significance and rural character that continues to make it an attractive place to live today.
