Living in Wickham

Wickham is a small village of around 1,000 people in the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just northwest of Newbury. It offers peaceful rural living with easy access to larger towns and key amenities. The village has a local shop, farm store, a couple of cafés and a well-liked pub. While there aren’t any big supermarkets in Wickham itself, Newbury is just a short drive away with a full range of shops, including Tesco and Sainsbury’s. There’s also a community hall, local GP access and a playground.

The village is well placed for travel, with the M4 nearby offering quick road links to Reading, Swindon and London. Buses connect to Newbury station, and a demand-responsive service helps cover surrounding rural areas. Wickham has deep historical roots, including a Roman road, medieval records, and the 12th-century church of St Swithin. Its setting is green and open, with fields, wooded areas and scenic walking routes right on the doorstep.

Housing ranges from old stone cottages to modest post-war homes and occasional newer builds. Development is limited, which helps keep the village’s character intact. House prices tend to be lower than in more commuter-heavy areas nearby. The community is active and close-knit. While there’s no school in the village, nearby primaries and secondaries in Newbury are popular choices. Annual events like the summer fete and feast day bring neighbours together, and local groups include gardening, walking and youth clubs.
