Melksham grew up at a ford across the Avon and was recorded in the Domesday Book. It became a wool and textile town, briefly tried to rival Bath as a spa after springs were found in 1815, and later built a long industrial tradition through rubber and tyre making. Housing runs from older stone terraces near the centre to post-war homes and modern estates, including Bowerhill and Berryfield on the southern side.
Melksham station sits on the TransWilts line between Swindon and Westbury, operated by Great Western Railway, with trains roughly every two hours each way and extra peak services. By road, the A350 runs north to M4 junction 17 near Chippenham and south towards Trowbridge and Westbury, while the A365 links the town with Devizes. Faresaver and First buses serve nearby towns.
